A journey through the history of one of Romania’s most respected sports schools
Mircea Eliade is one of the oldest and most respected sports schools in Romania, with an unbroken tradition of almost a century.
Founded in 1928, the school has produced generations of elite athletes — national and international champions, Olympians and leading figures of Romanian sport.
Across 97 years the school has evolved continuously, adapting to the modern demands of education and elite sport while keeping the values that define it: excellence, discipline, fair play and all-round development.
The school was founded between the wars, in a Romania that placed great value on physical education and the development of young people. It began with a small number of students and disciplines.
After the war the school grew into an important training centre, adding new disciplines and building facilities that were modern for their time.
The 1970s and 80s were the golden age of Romanian sport, and our school contributed significantly to it. Our graduates won medals at world championships and the Olympic Games.
After 1989 the school adapted to a new reality while keeping its standards, modernising its curriculum and opening up to international collaboration.
A historic moment: Alina Dumitru, a graduate of this school, won gold at the Beijing Olympic Games, becoming the first Romanian woman to win Olympic judo gold.
The school continues to grow, supported by major European projects — PNRR, PNRAS and SmartLab — modernising its facilities and digitalising teaching.
1907 - 1986
Mircea Eliade was one of Romania’s most important historians of religion and philosophers, recognised worldwide for his work on the history of religions, mythology and philosophy.
The school carries his name as a tribute to intellectual excellence and to the values he stood for: curiosity, disciplined study and openness to knowledge.
